About the Gram Panchayat

Village History

Hotgi Station is a village in South Solapur taluka, about 15 km from Solapur city. Both its identity and its name come from the railway junction here – it came to be called ‘Hotgi Station’ to set it apart from the neighbouring village of Hotgi. In 1882 the Southern Mahratta Railway began building the Hotgi–Gadag metre-gauge line as a famine-relief work, and Hotgi Junction station opened in 1884. Because the line to Bijapur and Gadag in Karnataka branches off the Mumbai–Chennai main line here, a settlement of railway employees grew around the station. The village is therefore known as ‘the village of railway service workers’; large railway workshops once operated here. A separate Gram Panchayat was formed in 1978. The Hotgi–Gadag line was converted to broad gauge in December 2008, and its later doubling and electrification further strengthened the village's connectivity. Alongside its railway heritage, the village keeps a rich tradition of farming and of celebrating Navratri with the Devi procession, Hanuman Jayanti and the jayantis of great personalities.
